Examples of Recent Cases

1.     
Trained in the UK but with 3/4 of his medical career in Africa, a doctor and his wife left Zimbabwe because of the intolerable political situation. Forbidden to transfer any money, and with only a negligible NHS pension and State Pension, this couple applied to the Royal Medical Foundation for help. The RMF provided an initial sum to help with the cost of transporting their belongings back to the UK, deaf aids, dental treatment and continue to provide a small monthly pension.
2.     
A full time General Practitioner and mother of 2 autistic sons, this doctor requested financial support from the RMF to part-pay for a short, intensive teaching programme for her sons. As a result of this provision, both children are now back in mainstream education.

Originally trained in India, but with most of his working life spent in this country, Dr X was left a widower with 4 children to bring up. A situation latterly compounded by his own ill health and inability to continue his medical career. The RMF has been able to ensure continuity of his 2 younger children's education during their GCSE and A-Level years.
4.     
The strain of looking after her disabled son and the early death of another child sapped this doctor's reserves. Her retired husband, also a doctor, moved into a nursing home suffering from dementia and the shortfall in fees was met by a collective safety-net of medical charities, including the RMF.
5.     
Eventual escape from an unhappy arranged marriage and with 2 teenagers to care for, this doctor's teenagers were both educated with the help of Foundation Scholarships and have gone on to University.
6.      The daughter of a doctor with whom she had no contact or minimal financial support, this talented student was given a 50% bursary from a top London day-school for her 2 final A-Level years. The RMF awarded the balance of her fees and this has enabled her to move on from an ‘inner-city' background and towards a flying start at Medical School.
